Oil as a key Caspian Cargo: cooperation between the seaports of Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan
As part of a working visit to Azerbaijan, a Turkmenistan delegation led by Parahat Jumayev, Director of the Turkmenbashi International Seaport, held a meeting with Eldar Salakhov, Head of LLC “Baku International Sea Trade Port.”
The negotiations were also attended by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Turkmenistan to the Republic of Azerbaijan, Gurbanmammed Elyasov.
As emphasized during the meeting, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan are consistently strengthening their strategic partnership, placing particular emphasis on the development of logistics cooperation between the international seaports of Turkmenbashi and Baku (Alat). In this context, special importance is attached to increasing cargo traffic across the Caspian Sea, developing the Middle Corridor, and expanding transport links between the two countries amid growing mutual trade.
The development of the ports of Turkmenbashi and Baku (Alat) is aimed at transforming them into key logistics hubs of the Caspian Sea serving the international East–West corridors. The main route connecting the two ports ensures the transshipment of oil, various types of cargo, and railway wagons.
Following modernization, the Turkmenbashi International Seaport has become a major transport hub, while the Baku Port in Alat continues to steadily expand its infrastructure, strengthening its role in both cargo and passenger transportation and occupying an important place along the modern route of the Great Silk Road.
The parties also discussed issues related to the development of the international Caspian Sea–Black Sea transit and transport corridor, including prospects for increasing cargo transportation through the ports of Turkmenbashi, Baku, Poti, Batumi, and Constanța. The importance of intensifying cooperation with all interested partners, including the European Union, was noted.
